Secure Managed Client

The Lenovo Secure Managed Client (SMC) is a storage-based alternative client computing computer software product. SMC is Lenovo’s entrant into the Desktop Virtualization market. Secure Managed Client delivers standard or customized desktop images directly from a storage array to ThinkCentre M58p clients.[1] The software and data are all centrally administered using the Secure Managed Client Management Console.

The Secure Managed Client solution consists of three major components:

  1. Secure Managed Clients: The clients consist of Lenovo ThinkCentre desktop computers running on Intel vPro technology. The clients are configured to boot directly from the Secure Managed Client storage array thus allowing the removal of the local client hard drive.
  2. Storage Array: The Lenovo Storage Array Appliance is the centralized data repository for the Secure Managed Clients. It is a 2U rack mount, fully populated 12 x 3.5-inch Serial ATA (SATA) hard disk drive (HDD) enclosure, optimized to provide iSCSI-based traffic through the use of 6 x 1 GB Ethernet ports. It is designed to host up to 100 concurrent active client devices. The Storage Array Appliance is available in models with 6, 9 or 12TB RAW storage.
  3. Software Stack: The Secure Managed Client Software Stack includes a Connection Manager that connects the user on the Secure Managed Clients to their ‘image’ on the storage array. The Secure Managed Client Management Console provides administration of the storage array and each individual client through technology provided by LANDesk [2] software. The software stack is available as a workgroup or enterprise license depending on functional needs.

Lenovo offers a number of add-on solutions for SMC, including storage array redundancy options, application virtualization and business analytics software. The business analytic software functions can be used to quickly pinpoint IT issues by enabling a collection of web and windows applications.
